Listán Blanco is the grape that occupies the largest cultivated area in the Canary Islands, including the Valle de Güímar Denomination of Origin.
Its productivity in different types of soils and microclimates and resistance to the most problematic grapevine diseases, such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, played an important role in its expansion.
On the other hand, it is sensitive to Botrytis, so that late and abundant rains are usually quite harmful.
It tends to prefer loose and light soils, although it does not behave badly in heavier soils, it is quite an all-terrain variety.
Morphologically, it is very similar to Palomino, the reference variety in the Marco de Jerez.
Its habit is semi-upright, with long and trifurcated tendrils. The clusters are cylindrical, long and not very compact, being wide at the shoulders. The berries are round, of medium to large size and green-gold color when ripe.
It is a variety that, in the south of the island of Tenerife, expresses itself best when grown at altitudes above sea level of more than 600 meters.
Its cultivation for the production of quality wines in the midlands and coastal areas in the south of Tenerife, where heat and sunshine are very high, has practically disappeared.
Other varieties typical of the Canary Islands, such as Marmajuelo, Gual or Malvasía, perform better in these conditions.
In the Güímar Valley, Listán Blanco is grown both in traditional low vineyards and on trellises. There are small productions in goblet, but they are testimonial.
At Bodega Hermanos Mesa, Listán Blanco accounts for approximately 80% of the total grapes harvested, depending on the vintage. Both our own grapes and grapes from our associated growers.
We make almost all of our wines from Listán Blanco:

- La Choza del Cabrero
- Oracan.
In these wines we find the classic characteristics of Listán Blanco, fresh, mineral wines, with aromas of freshly cut herbs, tomato leaf, lemon rind.
